HISTORY OF LANSDOWNE CRESCENT
Lansdowne Crescent was one of the West End of Glasgow's first crescents; built some 150 years ago in honour of the 3rd Marquis of Lansdowne. He had been appointed Rector of Glasgow University and made a Freeman of Glasgow for his good works ... something to do with Burke and Hare and supplying dead bodies to students.
In 1829 the Marquis was voted rector in a close vote and no wonder! When he was approached to be rector of the University he replied, "I'm deeply honoured but I presume need not go to Glasgow".
The principal pointed out that to fulfill the office he would have to come to the University at least one day.
Previously Lansdowne had been the British Chancellor of the Exchequer ... which explains a lot.
