The List Eating and Drinking Guide 2008/09

Situated in a Kelvinbridge basement just off Great Western Road, The Lansdowne Bar & Kitchen looks more sophisticated than the name might suggest , with floors, chairs, and substantial square tables of polished wood, and a bright conservatory at the rear. It's a place for locals and those who don't like their bars too crowded on weekends (when DJs play), as well as anyone looking for a comfortable bite to eat. However, the multitude of TV screens, all seemingly on different channels, can be distracting for diners. There's a choice of ciabatta sandiwches and salads for lunches or lighter meals, and a more extensive menu. From the starters, a sharp red onion marmalade complements the sweetness of the chicken liver parfait it covers, while the spiciness of the chilli, garlic and tomato liquour with the steamed mussels is well judged. More evidence of the chef's skill with spice is evident in a moist, flaky fillet of salmon, which comes with a punchy cajun crusy and the chilli kick of a Thai green curry hiding good-sized pieces of chicken and vegetables in a creamy coconut milk. Scoops of lemon and orange sorbet make for a cooling and refreshing antidote. A wide range of events hosted here can include quizzes, wine tasting, live jazz and salsa classes.

The Glaswegian (June 2006)

[The Lansdowne] has worked hard to ensure the reputation for fine food has been retained. The owners have put together a very varied menu served over almost the entire day. Meals start coming from the kitchen at 12 noon and can be ordered until 10pm.

My dining partner and I started with the Prawn Salad (£5.25) and the Smoked Chicken Caesar Salad (£4.25). Both were delicious. They are also available as light, main dishes and would be perfect for a healthy lunchtime option. I opted for the Fish & Chips (£7.50) as my main course and enjoyed a large chunk of cod in a melt-in-the-mouth beer batter accompanied by extremely good chips and tasty mushy peas. Incidentally, it's perfect hangover food. My partner had no complaints with her T-Bone Steak (£14.95) served with spinach, mushrooms and a fried egg.

We washed this down with a lovely red - Marques de Caceres Tempranillo (£17.75), part of the excellent wine selection at The Lansdowne.

It is an excellent venue to watch the World Cup and the spacious, open-plan bar has all sizes of TVs to take in the action, as well as 'quiet areas' where you can chat to friends.

If you haven't taken a look at the new look Lansdowne, it's time you did - you will be more than pleasantly surprised.

Sunday Mail Pub of the Week, 13 November 2005

"What is the atmosphere like?

It's a bit like stepping into Dr Who's Tardis. From an elegant spot of city greenery, you pass through a small, insignificant basement door - and arrive in a spacious, elegant pub. It's quite magical. This is a superb venue - the sort of place where everybody gets their own space and feels completely at ease. To keep the weekend crowds happy, DJs create a backdrop that features soul, hip hop and drum and bass on the musical menu.

Describe the decor:

The interior is classy but with real bite. The pub has undergone a comprehensive makeover. In the process they've missed nothing: art deco-style leather sofas are complemented by retro wallpaper, Irish pub parlour stools, great tables, abstract art on the walls and aclassy gantry. The art on display includes originals by the great Glasgow artist Colin Wilson plus atmospheric photographs of Glasgow. The eclectic mix works Who drinks here? There's a firm core of after-five workers who gather almost as a ritual. New faces appear all the time.

What about the staff?

The top team of West End veterans includes manager Ron Hyndman, with Murray MacLennan as his right-hand man and supervisor Nicola Montgomery.

What is the food like?

There are two distinct menus, noon until 2.30pm and 6-10pm, and there's also a separate all-day menu. Favourites include mug of soup (£2.95), Tuscan sausage lasagne and fries (£7.50); sticky toffee pudding and ice cream, (£3.75Facts Staropramen Czech beer, £2.25; Deuchars IPA, £2.50; Guinness, £2.80; Polish vodka (25ml), £2.40; whisky (25ml), £2.50; wine (175ml), £2.95

HERALD Going Out July 2005

"A varied menu, augmented by a sizeable specials board, should guarantee weekend custom and for a better place to flop downe with the Sunday supplements you might have to travel a fair distance....the Lansdowne retains its inviting evening ambience."

Glaswegian June 2005

" For a bar that has style, top food and good drinks, the lansdowne bar & kitchen is a hard one to beat!" "the crisp beer batter and succulent white fish made it the best cod I'd ever tasted and the hand cut chips were supreme....it was lipsmackingly delicious."

Times Out, Diner tec 16 June 2005.
